Description

Teske et al reported predictors for a low quality of life for a patient with discoid lupus erythematosus. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from a more extensive evaluation. The authors are from University of Southwestern Medical Center and University of Texas Austin.

Patient selection: discoid lupus erythematosus

Predictors of low quality of life:

(1) female sex

(2) low socioeconomic status

(3) current smoker

(4) negative emotions about the discoid lupus

(5) significant impact on daily life activities

(6) severe symptoms (pruritus, other)

The risk increases with the number of predictors present.
