Sobrin et al identified factors associated with the duration of chronic anterior uveitis. These can help to identify a patient who may require prolonged management and corticosteroid-sparing therapy. The authors are from the Systemic Immunosuppressive Therapy for eye Diseases Cohort Study Research Group.
Patient selection: chronic anterior uveitis
Predictors of reduced remission:
(1) younger age (< 40 years)
(2) longer duration of the uveitis at presentation (>= 2 years)
(3) bilateral uveitis
(4) prior cataract surgery
(5) prior glaucoma surgery
(6) presence of keratotic precipitates
(7) presence of synechiae
(8) diagnosis of juvenile idiopathic arthritis or spondyloarthropathy
A patient with multiple predictors may be at risk for a prolonged course.
