Description

Soares et al identified risk factors associated with hospital mortality for a patient with head and neck cancer admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). These can help identify a patient who may not benefit from intensive care. The authors are from Instituto Nacional de Cancer (INCA) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Parameters identified on multivariate analysis:

(1) tumor stage by TNM classification

(2) ECOG performance scale

(3) number of organ failures

(4) type of cancer

cumulative product of odds ratio =

= PRODUCT(odds ratio for all 4 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum cumulative odds ratio: 1

• maximum cumulative odds ratio: > 100

• The higher the cumulative odds ratio the greater the chances of in-hospital mortality.
