Description

Senet et al identified factors associated with healing of a leg ulcer in a patient with sickle cell disease. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from multiple hospitals in France.

Patient selection: leg ulcer in a patient with sickle cell disease

Factors associated with complete ulcer healing by week 24 (6 months) on multivariate analysis:

(1) ulcer area < 8 square cm (diameter 3.2 cm)

(2) duration < 9 weeks at presentation

Additional factors from the univariate analysis:

(1) higher hemoglobin F levels

(2) low serum LDH concentrations (reflecting low hemolysis)

The authors were unable to identify factors predictive of ulcer recurrence.
