Description

Schultz et al identified predictors for early infection and sepsis in a patient with an acute burn. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center and the University of Toronto in Canada.

Patient selection: acute burn

Outcome: early infection (within first 10 days of admission)

Predictors of early infection:

(1) FIO2 > 0.25

(2) maximum body temperature >= 39°C

Predictors of sepsis:

(1) heart rate >= 110 beats per minute

(2) systolic blood pressure <= 100 mm Hg

(3) intubation (marker of respiratory failure)

Limitation:

• This was a pilot study to be followed by a prospective study.
