Description

Sanders et al reviewed predictors of health-related quality of life for a patient undergoing cardiac surgery. Targeting these factors can improve outcomes. The authors are from St Bartholomew's Hospital, Queen Mary University of London, University of London and Griffith University.

Patient selection: adult undergoing cardiac surgery

Modifiable preoperative targets include:

(1) alcohol misuse

(2) abnormal body mass index (BMI)

(3) depression

(4) preoperative quality of life

(5) smoking

Postoperative targets for prevention:

(1) pain (intensity and duration)

(2) perioperative complications

(3) ICU admission

(4) ventilator use

(5) hospital length of stay

Interventions to reduce complications include preoperative correction of anemia, exercise capacity, and malnutrition.
