Peters et al identified factors associated with radiation toxicity following brachytherapy for a uveal melanoma. The presence of these factors can identify a patient who should be monitored more aggressively. The authors are from the University of Miami and the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in Miami.
Patient selection: uveal melanoma
Therapy: I125 eye plaque brachytherapy
Radiation toxicities may include:
(1) radiation maculopathy
(2) radiation neurovascular glaucoma/iris revascularization (RNGI)
(3) radiation optic neuropathy (RON)
Frequency of radiation toxicities: 69%
Predictors of radiation toxicity:
(1) shorter distance to fovea
(2) posttreatment exudative retinal detachment (PERD)
(3) posttreatment vitreous hemorrhage
Predictors of radiation maculopathy:
(1) female sex
(2) greater tumor height
Predictors of RON:
(1) pretreatment retinal detachment
