Description

Park et al identified factors associated with mortality for a patient starting renal dialysis after losing a renal allograft. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea.

Patient selection: renal allograft loss with need to restart dialysis

Outcome: mortality

Predictors of mortality:

(1) Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) >= 4

(2) serum albumin < 3.5 g/dL

(3) diabetes mellitus (history of > new onset)

Additional predictors:

(1) diabetic nephropathy as the cause of end-stage renal disease

(2) older age at graft loss (hazard ratio 1.12)
