Description

Pabst et al identified factors associated with survival of a patient placed on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) after suffering an acute myocardial infarction. The authors are from

Patient selection: acute myocardial infarction with cardiogenic shock requiring veno-arterial ECMO

Factors associated with better survival:

(1) age < 65 years (odds ratio 14.6)

(2) body mass index (BMI) < 32 kg per square meter (odds ratio 5.5)

(3) INR < 2 (odds ratio 7.3)

Additional findings associated with better survival:

(1) blood lactate < 3 mmol/L

(2) single vessel coronary artery disease (particularly the left anterior descending)

(3) intra-aortic balloon pump prior to ECMO insertion

(4) avoiding severe shock

The authors also found that the ENCOURAGE score was predictive in the study population.
