Description

Nomdedeu et al identified factors associated with excess mortality in a patient with myelodysplasia. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from multiple hospitals who participate in the Spanish MDS Group.

Patient selection: myelodysplastic syndrome

Excess mortality: mortality rate for patients with MDS versus mortality expected for a person of equivalent demographics

Predictors of excess mortality:

(1) older age

(2) male sex

(3) leukemic transformation

(4) intermediate, high and very high-risk categories (IPSS-R), with some excess with low risk

(5) comorbidities

Improved survival of a patient with myelodysplasia involves addressing multiple factors.
