Description

Muratori et al evaluated patients with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) and the response to therapy. The authors are from the Centre for the Study and Therapy of Autoimmune Liver Disease and Universita di Bologna in Italy.

Patient selection: autoimmune hepatitis

Therapy consisted of corticosteroids (methylprednisolone) and azathioprine.

Response is determined by change in liver function tests (LFTs) relative to the upper limit of the norma reference range (ULN).

Response

Liver Function Tests

complete

LFT's <= ULN (normalized)

incomplete

LFTs 1.01 to 2.0 times ULN

no/absent response

LFTs > 2 times ULN

Predictors of incomplete or absent response at initial diagnosis:

(1) cirrhosis

(2) younger age (mean 30 years of age vs 42 years for responders)
