Description

Murano et al reported factors associated with mortality following a civilian craniocerebral gunshot wound. This can help guide management and family counseling. The authors are from UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School.

Patient selection: civilian craniocerebral gunshot wound

Predictors of mortality:

(1) Glasgow coma scale on admission 3 or 4

(2) ISS > 25

(3) respiratory arrest on admission

(4) hypotension on admission (systolic blood pressure < 90 mm Hg)

(5) transhemispheric and/or transventricular trajectory

The risk of mortality increases with the number of predictors present.
