Description

Muangnoo et al reported factors associated with a functional incidental adrenal mass. This can make the diagnosis of a functioning incidentaloma more efficient. The authors are from Chiang Mai University in Thailand.

Patient selection: adrenal incidentaloma

Prevalence of incidentalomas that are functioning: 10-15%

A functioning incidentaloma may produce either catecholamines or glucocorticoids.

Predictors of a functioning incidentaloma:

(1) history of hypertension (OR 2.7)

(2) mass size > 4 cm (OR 2.2)

(3) Hounsfield units (HU) < 10 (OR 2.5)

The greater the number of predictors present, the greater the risk of functioning.
