Description

Moth et al reported predictors for severe chemotherapy-associated toxicity. The authors are from the University of Sydney, affiliated hospitals and Chris O'Brien Lifehouse in Australia.

Patient selection: older adult >= 65 years with a solid organ cancer

Outcome: toxicity grade >= 3, hematological or non-hematological

Most common non-hematologic toxicities: non-neutropenic infection, fatigue, nausea

Predictors of severe chemotherapy-related toxicity:

(1) Short Blessed Orientation Memory Concentration Test abnormal (>= 5; OR 2.7)

(2) timed up and go test >= 14 seconds (OR 4.2)

(3) impaired social activity due to health

Neither the CARG Toxicity Score nor the oncologist's estimate of risk were predictive of severe toxicity.

It is unclear if the predictors are causal or if they merely reflect the behaviors shown by a patient with severe toxicity.
