Description

Mohan et al reported factors associated with intensive care for a patient admitted for alcohol withdrawal. These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from Rutgers-Monouth Medical Center and King Hussein Cancer Center.

Patient selection: admission for alcohol withdrawal

Predictors for requiring an intensive level of care:

(1) high Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment Alcohol Revised (CIWA-Ar) > 16.5

(2) higher MCV (> 99 fL)

(3) rapid response team activation

(4) admission alcohol level < 13 mg/dL

(5) total dose of sedatives > 185 mg diazepam equivalents

(6) history of delirium tremens (DTs) or alcohol-related seizures

The presence of these risk factors can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management.
