Description

Modrall et al reported predictors for a blood pressure response following placement of an arterial stent in a patient with renal artery stenosis. This can help to identify a patient who may or may not respond to the procedure. The authors are from the Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center and University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Predictors of blood pressure response:

(1) requiring >= 4 antihypertensive medications (odds ratio 30)

(2) diastolic blood pressure > 90 mm Hg (odds ratio 31)

(3) use of clonidine (odds ratio 7.3)

(4) ipsilateral renal volume >= 150 mL (odds ratio 3.1)

Renal volume may be helpful for deciding if a patient on 3 antihypertensive medications is a candidate for stent placement.
