Description

A subset of patients with ocular myasthenia gravis will experience progression to generalized myasthenia over a few years. Mazzoli et al identified factors which can help to identify a patient at increased risk for this progression. The authors are from University Hospital and University of Modena and Reggio-Emilia in Italy.

Patient selection: ocular myasthenia

Outcome: progression to generalized myasthenia and/or bulbar symptoms

Predictors of progression:

(1) female gender

(2) age of onset for the ocular myasthenia > 50 years

(3) presence of antibodies to acetylcholine receptors (AChR)

The risk for progression increased with the number of predictors.
