Description

Martinez-Carranza et al reported predictors for non-walking status 4 months after a hip fracture. These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm.

Patient selection: hip fracture, age >= 50 years (mean age 81 +/- 9.3)

Frequency of being unable to walk at 4 months: 10%

Predictors of inability to walk:

(1) dementia (aOR 1.8)

(2) discharge to institutionalized care rather than home or rehabilitation facility (aOR 1.9)

(3) male gender (aOR 1.6)

(4) ASA grade III, IV or V (aOR 1.4)

Although age has a low OR (a1.01) this can become significant with advanced age. The mean age for walkers was 81 +/- 9.4 years versus 84 +/- 8.2 years for nonwalkers.
