Martinez-Canut reported risk factors for tooth loss in a patient with periodontitis after long-term periodontal maintenance. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The author is from the University of Valencia.
Patient selection: periodontal disease, from 23 to 74 years of age
Outcome: tooth loss due to periodontal disease (TLPD)
Parameters:
(1) severe periodontitis (probing pocket depth > 5 mm, bone loss > 50%, furcation involvement II or III)
(2) aggressive periodontitis
(3) smoking (>= 10 cigarettes per day) and bruxism
(4) years of periodontal maintenance treatment (up to 26 years)
(5) number of teeth at baseline

X for loss of more than 2 teeth =
= SUM(points for all 4 parameters) - 8.98
probability of having lost more than 2 teeth =
= 1 / (1 + EXP((-1) *X))
Y for loss of more than 3 teeth =
= SUM(points for all 5 parameters) - 6.221
probability of having lost more than 3 teeth =
