Description

Marthy et al reported factors predictive of hospital readmission for a patient with rib fractures followiing blunt trauma. These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive follow-up. The authors are from the Albany Medical College, Lahey Hospital and Albany Medical Center.


Patient selection: blunt trauma with rib fractures

 

Outcome: hospital readmission

 

Predictors from multivariate analysis:

(1) anticoagulation (OR 2.2)

(2) active smoking (OR 1.6)

(3) higher abdominal AIS scale (OR 1.5)

(4) has been diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder (OR 2.0)

 

Additional factors from univariate analysis:

(1) admission to the ICU

(2) nosocomial pneumonia

(3) rapid response team activation
