Description

Marchand et al reported factors associated with alcohol withdrawal syndrome that can be identified on admission to a trauma center. These can help to identify a patient who should be monitored for signs of withdrawal symptoms. The authors are from Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.


Patient selection: adult trauma patient with history of any alcohol use

Exclusion: admission Glasgow coma scale <= 8 with traumatic brain injury

(4) psychiatric disorder

(5) liver disease

(6) smoking history (current smoker >= 0.5 packs per day)

(7) in-hospital bronchodilator administration

(8) serum AST in U/L

(9) cognitive preservation (Glasgow coma scale >= 13 with BAC >= 100 mg/dL)
