Description

Mann-Salinas et al reported predictors for sepsis in burn patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). These can help to identify a septic patient before blood culture results are available. The authors are from the University of Texas Health Science Center Houston, Army Burn Center of the US Army Institute of Surgical Research, San Antonio Military Medical Center and University of Texas Southwestern.

Patient selection: burn patients in the ICU (primarily military personnel)

Predictors of sepsis:

(1) heart rate > 130 beats per minute

(2) mean arterial blood pressure < 60 mm Hg

(3) base deficit < -6 mmol/L

(4) temperature < 36°C

(5) use of vasoactive medications

(6) glucose > 150 mg/dL

Performance:

• The area under the ROC curve was reported as 0.78.
