Description

Lee et al reported risk factors for low adherence for oral 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) in a patient with ulcerative colitis. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from interventions to improve compliance. The authors are from multiple institutions in South Korea.

Patient selection: ulcerative colitis with prescription for oral 5-aminosalicylic acid

Frequency of low adherence: 50%

Predictors of low adherence in women:

(1) age less than 40 years of age (OR 3.7)

Predictors of low adherence in men:

(1) excessive alcohol use (OR 2.1)

(2) current smoking (OR 5.1)

A patient with ulcerative colitis should avoid smoking and drinking.

The prescribing physician should periodically review adherence and try to remove barriers to adherence.
