Lapa et al identified risk factors for dysphagia in a patient with acute pontine infarction. These can help to identify a patient who should be screened and monitored for dysphagia. The authors are from Goethe University in Frankfurt.
Patient selection: acute pontine infarction
Risk factors for dysphagia from multivariate analysis:
(1) older age
(2) larger infarct volume
(3) higher NIHSS value (>= 6), from 0 to 36
Additional risk factors:
(1) location (upper pons and pons in the anterolateral vascular territory)
