Description

Jorgensen et al identified factors associated with morbidity following a fast-track knee or hip arthroplasty. Preventable factors can be targeted for correction prior to surgery. The authors are from Copenhagen University.

Patient selection: fast-track hip or knee arthroplasty

Predictors of medical complications (falls, pneumonia, arrhythmias, mobilization issues):

(1) age >= 80 years

(2) anticoagulant therapy

(3) pulmonary disease

(4) anemia

(5) pharmacologically treated psychiatric disorder

(6) use of a walking aid

(7) hypertension

The presence of 2 or more of these medical predictors increased the risk of complications and should be the target for interventions.

Risk factors for surgical complications:

(1) total hip arthroplasty (THA)

(2) use of a walking aid

(3) cardiac disease

No clearly relevant prediction of surgical complications was possible.
