Description

Hosoglu et al identified risk factors associated with a poor outcome in a patient with tuberculous meningitis. These can help identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Dicle University Hospital in Diyarbakir, Turkey.

Patient selection: tuberculous meningitis in patients from 13 to 83 years of age

Risk factors for death:

(1) seizures

(2) coma

(3) delayed or interrupted therapy

Risk factors for neurological sequelae at 6 months after hospital discharge:

(1) extra-meningeal tuberculosis

(2) drowsiness

(3) hemiparesis or hemiplegia

(4) focal weakness

(5) multiple neurological deficits

(6) cranial nerve palsy

where:

• Most of the predictors of neurological sequelae are neurological sequelae.

• Some of the findings indicate Stage II or III in the BMRC classification.
