Hata et al identified factors associated with an increased risk for malignancy in a woman with an ovarian tumor. The authors are from Shimane Medical and Kagoshima Universities in Japan.
Parameters:
(1) serum CA125 in U/mL (radioimmunoassay, Centocor, Tokyo)
(2) peak systolic velocity (PSV) in cm/s on Doppler ultrasonography (correlates with neovascularization)
Parameters |
Finding |
Points |
serum CA 125 |
< 35 U/mL |
0 |
|
>= 35 U/mL |
1 |
peak systolic velocity (PSV) |
< 10.4 cm/s |
0 |
|
>= 10.4 cm/s |
1 |
total number of risk factors for malignancy =
= SUM(points for the 2 parameters)
Interpretation:
• minimum number of risk factors: 0
• maximum number of risk factors: 2
• The risk of cancer increases with the number of risk factors present.
• These findings can be combined with the ultrasonographic features.to determine the risk of malignancy.
Limitations:
• An elevated CA125 is seen in almost 25% of benign ovarian tumors (Table 6). A normal CA125 was seen in 36% of malignant tumors, mostly those that are Stage I.
