Erenler et al identified clinical and laboratory findings predictive of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) in an endemic area. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Hitit University, Ondokuz Mayis University and Amasya Sabuncuoglu Serefettin Education and Research Hospital in Turkey.
Patient selection: Emergency Department in endemic region
Predictors for CCHF:
(1) epistaxis
(2) leukopenia
(3) thrombocytopenia
(4) hyperkalemia
(5) elevated serum AST concentration
None of these findings are specific but the presence of multiple predictors should prompt testing for CCHF.
Some patients may have multi-organ failure (MOF), elevated serum creatinine kinase, elevated serum LDH and/or elevated serum ALT.
