Description

Di Giovanni et al reported predictors for in-hospital mortality and other outcomes for a patient with hip fracture. These can help to inform decisions for patient management. The authors are from the University of Chieti-Pescara, "La Sapienza" University of Rome, and local public health authorities in Italy.

Patient selection: adult with hip fracture, excluding polytrauma

Predictors of in-hospital mortality:

(1) age > 85 years (OR 5.4; OR 2.4 for age 65 to 85 years)

(2) cancer (OR 3.6)

(3) previous acute myocardial infarction (OR 3.1)

(4) atrial fibrillation (OR 2.0)

(5) dementia (OR 1.7)

(6) COPD (OR 2.7)

(7) liver disease (OR 2.8)

(8) heart failure (OR 7.8)

The risk of mortality increases with the number of predictors present.
