Description

Das et al evaluated patients with rectal cancer who received preoperative chemoradiation. They identified factors associated with complete response and pathologic downstaging. The authors are from the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Parameters:

(1) percent of rectal circumference involved by tumor

(2) distance from distal edge of the tumor to the anal verge in cm

(3) serum CEA concentration

total number of favorable prognostic factors =

= SUM(points for all 3 factors)

Interpretation:

• minimum number of prognostic factors: 0

• maximum number of prognostic factors: 3

• The greater the number of prognostic factors the better the outcome from preoperative chemoradiation.

• The highest rate of complete response was 27% which was seen with a low serum CEA and small tumor (small circumferential extent).
