Description

da Cunha Guimaraes et al reported predictors for hospital readmission for an older adult with a fracture. These can help to identify a patient who can be targeted for more aggressive management. The authors are from State School of Public Health Candido Santiago, State Emergency Hospital of Goiania Dr. Valdermiro Cruz and Federal University of Goias in Brazil.

Patient selection: older adult (>= 60 years) with a fracture requiring hospital admission

Outcome: readmission within 1 year

Reasons for readmission:

(1) clinical complication other than at fracture site (42%)

(2) fracture at another site (11%)

(3) complication related to fracture site (31%) including refracture at the same site

Predictors for hospital readmission from multivariate analysis

(1) age 60 to 69 years (OR 1.5)

(2) COPD (OR 2.5)

(3) femur as fracture site (OR 2.2)

(4) delirium (OR 3.4)
