Description

Claassen et al evaluated patients with status epilepticus. They identified risk factors associated with functional disability as well as mortality. The auhtors are from  Columbia University in New York City.

Patient selection: status epilepticus

Outcome: functional deterioration based on the Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS), with deterioration defined as an increase >= 1 at discharge vs status before episode

Parameters:

(1) number of days hospitalized

(2) acute symptomatic seizures (readily identified precipitant in a patient with no history of seizures). Seizure precipitants in absence of seisure history include: toxin, metabolic, stroke, global hypoxia-ischemia or other.

• Length of stay may need to be modified based on whether the patient is transferred to a skilled nursing facility once stabilized.

Older age (age >= 62 years) was associated with greater mortality (27% vs 5% for < 62 years).
