Description

Carmona et al identified factors affecting the return to work after carpal tunnel surgery. These can help to identify a patient who may require additional interventions to return to work. The authors are from the University of California in San Francisco.

Patient selection: status post carpal tunnel surgery

Outcome: relative rate of return to work per week after surgery

Factors associated with delayed return to work:

(1) receipt of worker's compensation

(2) exposure to high levels of bending and twisting of the hand prior to surgery (recorded as hours per day)

(3) female gender

Reducing the levels of bending and twisting of the hands at work is an intervention that may improve return to work.
