Description

Burks et al identified factors associated with malnutrition in an older adult being evaluated in the Emergency Department (ED). The authors are from the University of North Carolina, Cooper University Hospital, and William Beaumont Hospital (Royal Oak, Michigan).


Patient selection: age >= 65 years, in the Emergency Department

 

Predictors for malnutrition in an older adult:

(1) not having a college degree

(2) residence in an assisted living facility

(3) being admitted to the hospital

(4) poor oral health

(5) moderate or severe food insecurity

(6) lack of transportation affecting diet

(7) depressive symptoms

(8) medication side effects affecting diet

(9) loss of appetite or gastrointestinal problems

 

A patient judged to be at risk for malnutrition should have a formal nutrition assessment.
