Description

Bouaziz et al reported factors associated with development of pulmonary edema in a patient with a severe scorpion sting. This can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from CHU Habib Bouguiba Sfax-Tunisie.

Patient selection: severe scorpion envenomation, age >= 3 years of age

Prevalence of pulmonary edema in study group: 69%

Predictors of pulmonary edema:

(1) respiratory rate >= 30 breaths per minute (tachypnea)

(2) agitation

(3) sweating

(4) plasma protein >= 72 g/L

(5) age < 5 years (3 or 4)

(6) white blood cell count >= 25,000 per microliter

Testing with pro-BNP or BNP would also be useful but might not be readily available.
