Description

Belmont et al identified risk factors predictive of hospital readmission following a total shoulder arthroplasty. These may help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from William Beaumont Army Medical Center, University of Texas El Paso, and the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences.

Patient selection: total shoulder arthroplasty

Outcome: 30-day hospital readmission

Risk factors for readmission:

(1) ASA classification >= 3

(2) history of cardiac disease

(3) periprosthetic joint infection

(4) myocardial infarction

(5) pulmonary embolism and/or deep venous thrombus (DVT)

(6) pneumonia

(7) urinary tract infaction
