Description

Assuncao et al identified predictors of hospitalization for a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from Universitario de Coimbra and University of Beira Interior in Portugal.

Patient selection: systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)

Causes for hospitalization include overall disease activity and infection.

Predictors of all-cause hospitalization from multivariate analysis:

(1) male sex (HR 1.6)

(2) age > 50 years (HR 1.6)

(3) positivity for antiphospholipid antibodies (HR 1.6)

(4) SLEDAI-2K > 5 (HR 1.06 per point)

(5) significant organ damage, includiing lupus nephritis (HR 1.7)

(6) prednisone daily dose (PDN) in mg (HR 1.03 per mg; 1.6 for 15 mg)

Therapy with antimalarials (hydroxychloroquine) was associated with a lower risk of hospitalization (HR 0.6)..
