Description

Artornsombudh et al identified conditions which indicate that new-onset anterior uveitis may persist without remission. These may indicate a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from multiple hospitals in the United States.

Risk factors for remission failure:

(1) juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA)

(2) Behcet's disease

(3) bilateral uveitis

(4) history of cataract surgery

(5) >= 1+ vitreous cells at presentation

(6) initial visual acuity <= 20/200

Interpretation:

• A patient with none of these findings is more likely to have a remission.

• The greater the number of risk factors the greater the chances of a chronic uveitis.
