Argueta et al reported risk factors predictive of 30-day readmission for a patient undergoing bariatric surgery. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Rush University, Cleveland Clinic and Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Patient selection: status post bariatric surgery
Outcoe: 30-day readmission
Predictors of readmission:
(1) Charlson comorbidity index >= 3 (aOR 1.4)
(2) longer length of stay (aOR 1.01; paper reference 4.6 vs 2.4 days)
(3) admission to a hospital with a larger number of beds (aOR 1.2)
(4) discharge to a skilled nursing facility or for home health care (aOR 1.6 for both)
(5) acute kidney injury (aOR 1.7)
(6) central parenteral nutrition (aOR 2.0)
Factors associated with a lower risk of readmission:
(1) uninsured or private insurance (aOR 0.5 if uninsured; 0.6 if private insurance)
(2) body mass index < 45 kg per square meter (aOR 0.6 if < 39; 0.83 if 40-44)
