Description

Ali and Gibbons reported predictors for 30-day readmission following a hip fracture. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London.

Patient selection: hip fracture

Outcome: 30-day readmission

Predictors of early readmission include:

(1) older age (> 85 years)

(2) higher ASA grade (III or IV)

(3) poor functional status (partial or total disability)

(4) pre-existing pulmonary disease

(5) pre-existing neurological disorder

(6) discharge location (location other than home, poor link between location and hospital)

Reasons for readmission - most are related to a medical problem:

(1) pneumonia

(2) cardiovascular disease

(3) renal dysfunction

(4) gastrointestinal disorder

(5) surgical site infection

(6) fixation failure of the implant
