Description

Abdulkader et al identified factors predictive of hospital admission for a pediatric patient with Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome. The authors are from Nationwide Children's Hospital and the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.

Patient selection: pediatric patient with cyclic vomiting syndrome

Predictors for hospitalization:

(1) male sex (OR 4)

(2) younger age (mean age for hospitalized patients was 9.6 years vs 12.2 for those not admitted)

(3) presentation to the ED > 24 hours after onset (odds ratio 11.8)

(4) longer waiting time in the ED prior to starting antiemetic therapy (OR 1.7; 2.9 hours for those admitted vs 2.1 for those not admitted)

The risk of hospitalization increases with number of risk factors present.
