Polavarapu et al reported a model for predicting risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). This can help to identify an infant who may benefit from preventive strategies. The authors are from the University of Toledo, University of Illinois, Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, Children's Hospital of Illinois, and Washington University.
Parameters:
(1) z score for birthweight
(2) passive exposure to smoking
(3) maternal age at time of childbirth
(4) family history of SIDS
(5) breastfeeding duration in months
(6) maternal anemia during pregnancy

Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 9
• The higher the score the greater the risk of SIDS.
• A cutoff score >= 6 was 44% sensitive and 90% specific.
Performance:
• The area under the ROC curve is 0.79
