Description

Petric et al reported factors predictive of malignancy in a follicular neoplasm of the thyroid gland. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the Institute of Oncology in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Patient selection: follicular neoplasm on fine needle aspiration of the thyroid

Parameters:

(1) age

(2) number of thyroid nodules

(3) preoperative serum thyroglobulin in ng/mL (DYNO immunoradiometric test, Henning)

cumulative odds ratio for malignancy =

= PRODUCT(odds ratios for the 3 risk factors)

Interpretation:

• minimum cumulative odds ratio: 1

• maximum cumulative odds ratio: 7.8

• The higher the cumulative odds ratio the more likely that the nodule is malignant.
