Description

Nyilas et al reported factors associated with successful laparoscopic splenectomy for a patient with immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). The authors are from Albert Szent-Gyorgyi Health Center and University of Szeged in Hungary.

Patient selection: therapy-resistant immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP)

The response to an intervention depends on the post-therapeutic platelet count.

Post-Therapy Platelet Count

Response

> 100,000 per µL

complete

30,000 to 100,000

partial

< 30,000 per µL

nonresponse

Predictors of a response to splenectomy:

(1) age < 50 years

(2) responsive to preoperative steroid therapy (steroid dependent)

Laparoscopic splenectomy is associated with a good short and long-term response.
