Description

Aaldriks et al identified factors associated with deterioration of a geriatric patient starting chemotherapy for advanced cancer. Chemotherapy can have a negative impact on a geriatric patient who is physiologically vulnerable. The authors are from the Institute of Mental Health, GGZ-Delfland, Delft, the Netherlands.

Patient selection: older adult (older than 70 years) starting chemotherapy for advanced cancer

Poor prognostic factors:

(1) poor nutritional status (determined by the Mini Nutritional Assessment)

(2) frailty (determined by the Groningen Frailty Index)

A patient with poor prognostic factors:

(1) may not be able to complete the full course of chemotherapy prescribed

(2) may have a higher mortality rate

(3) may show physical and mental deterioration after starting therapy
