Yu et al reported equations for estimating the lean body mass of an adult. The authors are from Queen Elizabeth Hospital and University of Adelaide in Australia.
Patient selection: adult
Parameters:
(1) body weight in kilograms
(2) body mass index in kilograms per square meter
(3) age in years
(4) sex (1 if male, 0 if female)
lean body mass in kilograms =
= (0.684668 * (weight)) - (1.137156 * (BMI)) - (0.009213 * (age)) + (9.940015 * (points for sex)) + 22.932326
Performance:
• The equation tends to overestimate lean body mass by about 1 kilogram.
