The risk of variceal hemorrhage from esophageal varices can be predicted by the appearance on esophageal endoscopy. The varices were classified by the "General Rules for Recording Endoscopic Findings on Esophageal Varices" prepared by the Japanese Research Society for Portal Hypertension.
