Morgan et al developed an equation for predicting the aerobic demand of healthy children aged 6 to 10 years while walking on a treadmill. The authors are from the Arizona State University and 4 other American universities.
Subjects: Healthy children from 6 to 10 years of age (14 girls, 9 boys)
oxygen uptake in mL per kg per minute =
= 24.852 + (0.003214 * ((walking speed in meters per minute)^2)) – (0.995 * (age in years)) – (0.263 * (walking speed in meters per minute))
SEE = 1.74 mL per kg per minute
where:
• For hand calculation of the equation, the age could be used without the 0.995 factor.
• Walking speeds ranged from 40 to 107 meters per minute.
