Fox developed a simple equation to predict maximal oxygen uptake for a person using a bicycle ergometer.

The subjects used to develop the equation were healthy, untrained college males.

Testing conditions:

(1) A person uses a bicycle ergometer running with a pedal speed of 60 rpm and work load of 150 W.

(2) The heart rate is measured during 5th minute.

predicted maximal oxygen uptake in mL per minute =

= 6300 - (heart rate in beats per minute during 5th minute of exercise at 150 W)
