Shigella species are highly contagious and require careful precautions to prevent nosocomial spread.
Issues:
(1) contact precautions
(2) cleaning of room after patient discharge
(3) multi-drug resistance
Precautions required: contact isolation, including the prevention of shared objects between patients and scrupulous hand-washing
Precautions are kept in place until 3 stool cultures are negative after cessation of antibiotic therapy.
Once a patient has been discharged then the room needs to be carefully cleaned.
The presence of multi-drug resistance may necessitate complete isolation.
